Permeability - The taste & smell of success

Food is good only for as long as its freshness and aromas last. Although on a longer scale, the same need for freshness is also true for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.  The key lies in controlling a product’s vapours, mainly oxygen, CO2 and aromas.  Some vapours need to be kept in or out and others need to seep in or away.   Fortunately, Versaperm’s equipment can measure all of these, allowing users to optimise the results for materials and packaging.

Versaperm equipment works on all packaging materials and vapours, including coatings, laminates, films, cards and plastics as well as for produce, pharmaceuticals, and modified atmospheres.

The system allows users to detect any and all gases*, even highly volatile top-note aromatic compounds - all with accuracies in the Parts Per Million (PPM) to PPB ranges.  The equipment can even measure plant ripening hormone ethylene.

It can do this not just on material samples, but also on complete finished and packaged product.  This is particularly important as manufacturing processes such as heating, thermoforming, folding, stretching etc. can alter a package’s vapour permeability by several hundred percent.  The process enables you to preserve aromas, freshness and taste, often for many times longer.

Versaperm’s meters can measure the permeability for all of the individual components in a complex aroma, with just a single measurement.  Where desired, the equipment can also control temperature, pressure and other cyclical factors.

As well as manufacturing the instruments, Versaperm offers a permeability testing service for companies that only need to test packaging or materials on an irregular basis.
